Parshat Matot-Masei

As Heard From Rabbi Avigdor Miller ZT”L

“For I Hashem dwell in the midst of the sons of Israel.” (35:34)

This declaration is the most stupendous statement, after Bereshit 1:1, in the entire Scriptures. The Creator of the Universe has chosen to rest His Presence forever among the sons of Israel, who are thereby elevated to an importance greater than all Mankind and the entire Universe. This principle is obvious throughout the Scriptures, where Hashem speaks to Israel and deals with them and with them alone.

Because of the importance of this principle:
1. Every verse in the Torah should be read with this statement in mind.
2. Every incident in the history of men must be viewed with this statement in mind.

“Seed of Israel, His servant; sons of Jacob, His chosen ones. He is Hashem our G-d, in all the world are His judgements.” (Tehillim 105:7) Whatever transpires in the world is done by the decision (”judgement”) of Hashem. But in addition we must know that it is done by Hashem as our G-d, meaning that Hashem has in mind His chosen ones whenever He makes any act (”judgement”) in all the world, everywhere and always.

“Even a ship sailing from Gaul to Spain is prospered solely because of Israel.” (Yevamot 63A)
